  • The Castle Esplanade Residence

This fabulous 1876 mid Victorian, two bedroom, period apartment has amazing views and is located in the heart of the Old Town, just metres from Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile. It was the subject of a three page design article in the national newspaper Scotland on Sunday weekend magazine “Homes and More” in September 2017 and in October 2017 appeared in another article on the Scotsman newspapers Facebook page entitled “Is this Edinburghs best located holiday let?”

As you enter the apartment you will find the hallway opening into the open plan lounge/dining and kitchen area. You can sink into the comfortable corner sofa and catch up on events on the 36” plasma screen TV. If you have brought your laptop you will be able to use the free and unlimited WiFi broadband to surf the web or maybe you would just prefer to relax with some music from the cd player. There is also a flame effect stove in the lounge for a bit of character to compliment the golden cornice work and ornamental iron rams head fireplace, while the original internal wooden shutters still stand guard over the old sash and case windows.

The dining area in the lounge sits in front of the window and is one of the most unique dining views in Edinburgh. There are only a handful of properties that can say they can look into the front door of Edinburgh castle and you can enjoy your self-catering with a view that can’t be beat. In addition to the amazing castle view the three double aspect windows also provide spectacular views over the Grassmarket, Greyfriars and the Pentland hills beyond. You will be able to prepare your food in a fully equipped kitchen, which has oven, hob, dishwasher, fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle and there is also a freezer and washing machine in the hallway. All crockery and cutlery is included so you should have anything you need to make an excellent dinner.

Tucked away off the lounge is a small library, which is stocked with a selection of local historical and topical books. There is a small writing area as well so with the character and views in the apartment you may well be inspired to write something in the city that has already inspired writers such as JK Rowling, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and Ian Rankin amongst others.

A good nights rest is assured in both bedrooms, with the same breath taking views directly overlooking the castle and esplanade, thanks to the comfortable orthopaedic mattresses. Each bedroom has a built in wardrobe providing ample space for even the most demanding fashionista. You will also find an ironing board, iron and hairdryer in each room so you don’t have to wait for others to get ready. The main bedroom is set up as a standard double and the other bedroom can either be set up as a king size or a twin as required. Our extra wide luxury shower room is finished in travertine tiling and has a 10kw shower.

Throughout the apartment you will find high quality finishes with solid oak flooring, seagrass carpets and stainless steel appliances.

In summary this apartment has been designed for guests who want to be able to get here easily and really experience the old town of Edinburgh as it was 150 years ago, If you want your accommodation to be as much a reminder of your holiday as everything you do when you are in Edinburgh then this is the place for you. • The David Hume Residence (Edinburgh)

Situated at the top of the famous Royal Mile, 100 metres from the entrance to Edinburgh Castle is the David Hume Residence. It is named after the famous Scottish Philosopher who took up residence in the newly-refurbished and culturally significant Riddell’s Court in 1751. The building retains much of the architecture and character of that era and contrasts uniquely to the modern, stylistic interior of the apartment which serves as a superb base from which to enjoy the attractions that Edinburgh and Scotland has to offer all year round.

Accessed from the entrance to Riddell’s Court at 322 Lawnmarket, a stone spiral staircase takes you up to the second floor apartment.

Occupying space over two floors, the architecturally-designed apartment provides a comfortable living area with open plan access to a fully fitted kitchen with modern appliances and breakfasting area. A bathroom with a bath and shower attachment complete the lower floor accommodation. A sweeping staircase from the hall accesses both bedrooms which share a Jack and Jill en-suite wet room which is well presented to modern standards. This floor is also complemented by a large balcony off the back bedroom which overlooks the courtyard. It is also worth noting that the all windows to the front of the property have secondary glazing resulting in virtually no Royal Mile street noise.

As you walk out of the apartment and onto the bustling Royal Mile you will be met with a multitude of attractions - shops, bars, restaurants and, of course, places of historical interest and significance. From the apartment windows, during the Edinburgh Festival you will get a classic view of the Royal Military Tattoo bands as they make their way up to the Castle. The famous shopping areas of Princes Street and George Street are a five minute walk away as are the train and bus stations which provide easy access for trips to surrounding towns and cities. There is an excellent local bus service as well as frequent trams to and from the airport. Edinburgh is also an ideal base from which to head east to the famous Golf Coast, east to the unspoilt Highlands and Trossachs or west to Loch Lomond, Glasgow and the Western Isles.

Please note: A meet and greet service is provided, whereby you will be met at the property, provided with keys and shown round the apartment by Michelle, the apartment manager, who will be happy to respond to any questions you may have.
