My mom, grandma and I stayed in this apartment March 22-28. We had been wanting to visit Scotland together for years, the opportunity finally came, and we had a fantastic time.
This apartment was perfect for us. Right on the Royal Mile-- St. Giles is just across from this place-- so we didn't have to worry about driving anywhere or finding transportation. We just walked and took buses everywhere we wanted to go. The location is great. If you open the windows during the day, you can hear street performers playing just below- Awesome!
We didn't have any problems with noise at night. All of the windows in the place have wooden shutters and heavy drapes, and the area around the building was very quiet at night (after the ghost tours stopped). It's possible that noise might be more of a problem during peak tourist season or festivals, but that's probably true of anywhere that you'd stay on the Mile - and possibly less of a concern here because there are no clubs or late restaurants (that I noticed) immediately around the place...
Other than that, the only caution that I might give would be about the stairs. There are a lot of them. Totally worth the climb for the spectacular views that this apartment has, but definitely could be a problem if you have bad knees...=)
At this point, I should mention that the gentleman who let us into the apartment, Mr. Stewart, very kindly insisted on carrying my grandma's suitcase all the way up those stairs for us. We appreciated that very much.
**I have stayed at three different apartments with Edinburgh Self Catering-- over all very happy with the company. I'm planning to write reviews for Parliament Sq. 2 and Niddry St. 3, too!
Response from Parliament Sq 1, on Royal Mile, 300 metres from Edinburgh Castle on 13 May 2011:
Thank you for spending the time to write such a comprehensive review for Parliament Sq 1. It is always good to know that the accommodation contributed to a great experience in Edinburgh.
Thank you also for allowing Dave Stewart to carry the luggage, he can certainly do with the excercise.
